Meditation Question

Hello,

So for the longest time I did not know how to be in a meditative state because I could not clear out my thoughts, always some thoughts going around nonstop. These past couple of days I was able to stop my thoughts at least for half hour and close my eyes to see how it feels.

In the beginning it felt really relaxing. You know the feeling when alpha waves hit you? That was it. Felt really great for about 5 minutes then I noticed that I am starting to fall asleep.

I tried it this exercise again and again but could not go on for more than 10 minutes because I felt like I would fall asleep.

My question is – am I doing something wrong or this is how it is in the beginning after which one gets used to it and can move on to the next phase?
